About NLP

What Is NLP?

NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) is the study of your mind and how you re-create Excellence. It is a study of what works and what kind of results you want to produce and experience for yourself, when you want and how you want it done.

The definition of Neuro-Linguistic Programming can be broken up into these 3 words for simplicity:

  • Neuro refers to the nervous system which relates to our 5 senses namely: Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic, Olfactory (smell), Gustatory (taste). We take in information through these 5 senses.
  • Linguistic relates to language and other NVC through which our neural networks representations are coded, ordered and are given meaning. This includes pictures, sounds and feelings, tastes and smells and the words we use in self talk.
  • Programming refers to the ability to discover and utilise the successful programs that have been running within our minds in conjunction with programs which others use to achieve the excellence they so unconsciously produce. The idea here is to reproduce the programming behind success, excellence and performance of those who stand out from the ordinary to become extraordinary.

NLP sometimes seems to overwhelm people who are not familiar with the science because it sounds complex until you understand what it does and how it works. NLP is about how you use the language of the mind to achieve the specific expertise we want to muster; about how we can ensure that the internal representation (which is how the mind makes meaning based on the beliefs, knowledge, experiences, values, etc of the person) can produce the kind of state and physiology we want which in turn produces the intended behavior thus allowing the kinds of outcomes we need.

What intrigues me about this work is that you will realise the choices available to influence your beliefs, values, knowledge and experiences in a way that allows you to influence your feelings and hence determine the experiences you want to have. Now that's powerful stuff indeed!
